Hyundai Sonata launch

On 5th April 2010 I headed off to Grand Hyatt for the Hyundai Sonata launch. A completely redesigned vehicle that looked stunning in pictures.

So at around 7:50pm, me and my friend got to the venue. I was not looking forward to another dinner in a hotel as I find hotel food to be quite mediocre. We entered the hall and realized there wasn't any space left for us to sit which was unusual for such an event. While waiting for the hotel staff to find some space for us, I moved my focus to the stage where 4 Chinese (or Korean?) women were performing the fan dance. Their synchronization was poor and one of the them even dropped a fan. The performance ended and they found two empty seats for us. By then we had already missed the starters (no hummus for me...). Some speeches were made about how great Hyundai is. Now I'm not being sarcastic, Hyundai has come a long way and honestly they make fantastic cars especially for the money you pay for them. Surprisingly, the speeches were made from the table the officials were sitting on and not from the stage. The main announcement made during the speeches was the Fifa 2010 promotional campaign where some Hyundai customers will get a opportunity to travel to South Africa to watch some of the best matches. Pretty cool in my opinion. The last speech of the lot was from the South African ambassador I think, who choose to speak from the stage instead. His speech was by far the best. One point he highlighted was that South Africa is as safe as any country can be and that the government has put every effort to make sure everyone visiting is safe. Good to know.

And then the people (2 men and 4 women) in skin tight clothes came on stage to perform Acrobatic moves with exercise balls. It was the most indecent/vulgar act I have seen live. Urgh!! I had no interest in watching men or women in tight clothes doing weird moves so I started counting the bulbs in the room and admiring the hotel decorations. Performance over and then a short award ceremony took place where they were thanking various government organisations.

Another short speech (from the stage) was made about the new Sonata. This is were I got interested. The car seem to come with a lot of standard equipment like automatic headlights, paddle shifters, fog lamps, leather wrapped steering wheel, Cruise control, CD/MP3 stereo with 6 speakers, USB and AUX ports with iPod cable, steering wheel buttons etc which is more than what you get in other similar priced cars. The only let down was the 176 hp 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine which is less powerful than the engine this car is sold with in the US. Options for higher models include panoramic glass roof, intelligent keyless entry with start button, power-folding mirrors, HID headlights, driver’s power-adjusted seat, stability control, six airbags etc Quite an impressive list. For more information you can visit drivearabia.com.

The speech ended and the skin tight people returned but this time dressed more appropriately to perform the worst choreographed dance sequence ever. The horror ended and the covers were removed revealing the car to us. Another short speech was made and everyone flocked to the cars apart from a few including us. Dinner was served and this is where I don't seemed to remember anything apart from me munching on some fantastic food. The rice, kebabs, prawns, fish, paneer....everything tasted amazing. I have never eaten so much at any corporate event ever.

Once we were done with the main course, we made our way to the car. There were two of them, black and red, both were the fully equipped version. The car didn't look as impressive as I thought it would. It has a lot of curves which I feel seems a little over the top. Even the interior looked less impressive. Cheap plastic all over the place with hardly any soft touch material was a bit disappointing even though it was at par with the class standard. The leather seats were nice and comfortable while rear headroom was good but legroom was quite average. The only aspect of the car that really impressed us was the finish i.e the built quality. It was close to flawless. Overall the car is a lot better then what some competitions are offering and if I hadn't bought a car recently, I would have considered this as one of my options.

After that we headed back to our tables to enjoy some delicious desserts while watching the crowd slowly disappear. Till the time we left, there were maybe just 20 people left. By that time, they had ran out of press kits so we left empty handed which was sad cause that meant I didn't get any freebies. Anyway a good day out, where the food was just brilliant and the car was pretty decent.

So last month I was assisting David Nightingale at Gulf photo plus 2010 event. Here are some pictures taken on the the 3rd of march in the desert(somewhere between the Al Ain-Dubai and Hatta-Dubai road) that was part of our landscape photography class field trip. So it was a free safari ride for me and an opportunity to take pictures in the middle of no where, something I haven't done before. I had sand all over my body and my camera but it was still a lot of fun.

Over two weeks of madness where due to my stupidity I lost my best friends, confessed in public that I'm an asshole, spent a lot of money on pointless things, tried to kill myself multiple number of times, went a little mad, cried like a baby, punched the wall with swollen knuckles, laughed like a maniac, talk to my shadow, not eat food etc etc etc... And I thought I deserved all this pain. I thought wrong....The only silver lining in all of this mayhem is that I think I've found a new friend who has managed to knock some sense into me. It's ironic how a stranger has made more of an effort to make sure I was okay than the people who were supposedly close to me. Anyway I'm done forgiving people cause they never forgive me for what I do. And it's just not one person, the whole lot, i.e CC, gudiya, tashu, D.O. Whoever I've been close to. So I'm going do what they always do...look out for myself...

Been going through the posts I had made in 2006/07 and it just made me realise how much of my life is on this blog. There is so much I had forgotten that I remember now and I kinda regret turning this blog into a photo blog cause I wasn't able to capture more of my life into this blog. And just like every other time I've tried to end this blog, I come back and end up blogging again. So here I am, back again....

I've always wanted a car. Now I've got one and I was very happy about it though ignoring the part where people keep scratching it with keys or I keep hitting the pavement and scratching the wheels. I wanted to become a photographer but had no work. Lately been so busy that I haven't been able to spend enough time at home again ignoring the part that I still don't get paid enough but it still made me happy. I've even managed to socialize lately which is a huge achievement for me. All of this feels great or atleast I thought it would. Currently the people I care about are not talking to me. I've become the person I've never wanted to be. I was heading that way for a very long time and had seen the warning signs but being the jerk I am, I ignored it all. Today no one knows how I feel, cause no one cares. I have nothing....even though I thought I had everything....hopefully I'll manage to survive this phase of my life without killing myself(ignoring the part that I'm a complete pipsqueak and won't have the guts)....and I'm not going to say sorry to anyone cause I know I deserve this....

This is how every outing is planned in Dubai IMO. So to be social in Dubai, you need to love sheesha or bars. I think I'll prefer being socially inactive than to waste my life on such disgusting things...so that...

2pm
16th March 2010

Weakening the borders
This is extinction
A termination of memories
Broken inside...
Shattering the desires
The future is gone
Or maybe it was never there
Dead end...
No one understands
Misery - Pain – Death
A combination of everything
Is the lie that we call Happiness...
But who am I to say this
Is there a meaning to anything?
Or do meanings really matter
Confusion
Contradiction
Is the story of my life
But then am I really living
Drifting aimlessly
Going through the motions
Aiming for the end
And all of this
Sounds like gibberish
This sounds like who I am...

...the way I interact. I'm totally anti social...time to get out and meet the world...

...my attitude. I'm a rude arrogant person who cares a little too much about the people I love. Time to kick that love out with all that rudeness. There is no place for emotions in my life anymore....

...the way I present my self. I don't want to be treated like a kid anymore so I need to act like a grown up...

hmm..I think I'm done. I'm giving myself till march to achieve half of these things. I've got enough reasons to do this, Inshallah I'll be able to be who I want to be...

Opinion required

So a friend of mine (lets call him Mu) asked my opinion regarding a situation he's in. I'm not sure how he ended up telling me this but now I literally know almost everything about his love life...weird. Anyway here's the situation....

Basically he's been going out with a girl (lets call her Ri) for over a year now but things haven't turned out the way he thought they would.
Initially when he had started liking Ri, he did a lot of things to impress her and after a long waiting period, she agreed to be with him. But things got complicated and she ended up being not the girl he had initially liked.

Then there is this other girl (lets call her Ta) who Mu used to like a lot ages ago but she had turned him down. Just recently he finds out that Ta has started liking him also and being the not so happy boyfriend he tends to get close to Ta and starts liking her all over again but Ta refuses to be with him due to various family issues.

So Mu wants to be with Ta who does not want to meet Mu again (she's scared she'll end up doing something stupid) while Ri has no idea all this has been happening...

He was curious to know what I thought about it and even though the right decision would be to stay with Ri and fix the issues instead of running behind Ta and possibility not getting anything in the end i.e losing both Ri and Ta, I told him to run behind Ta cause that's where he wants to be and that's what he should do......good advice or bad..?? any opinion welcome....

Clouds Lightning but no Rain...

So while I left home to photograph the sunset, I spotted this cloud towards the east. Looked interested so I decided to head towards Jadaf where I could get a better look at it and possibly better shots. I reached, parked my car and looked at the cloud carefully. What I say next were over a dozen lightnings. I got excited and I called a friend, asked him if he wanted to go storm chasing. He said yes...So I snapped this quick shot (I had only brought my wide angle with me) and drove off to my sisters office to take her home.

I told my sister about the cloud and about my plans. So she called home and asked my parents if they wanted to go storm chasing. Basically when we were kids, as a family, we used to do this a lot. It used to be our own little adventure trips. If we heard it was raining somewhere in the UAE, we'd try to get there in the next few hours and look for dark clouds to drive to. Good days!!! Don't do that much anymore.

Anyway back to the story....I told my friend that I'm going with my family. We left home at 6:20pm, headed towards Hatta. We couldn't see any clouds or lightning anywhere. After driving for around 60-70 kms, we decided to head in the general direction of Al Ain on a road we'd never taken before though we kinda knew where it was going. Still no clouds or lightning. We hit the Dubai-Al Ain road and decided to head back home. Got home at 8:50pm, no clouds, no rain....just munching on some good shawarma, disappointed at the lack of any excitement...though it felt good getting back into the storm chaser mode after a really long time....

Clear skies with some cloud cover. Perfect setting for some landscape shots....Instead of being outside taking spectacular landscape shots, I sat at home wondering if I should go out or not. Annoying....

On a separate note, I need to buy some ND grad filters....hmm...

I went, I saw and I didn't say a word. Well almost. I made a single contact, thats it, that also due to a friend. Didn't approach anybody and nobody approached me. Must be because of the yellow shirt I was wearing....hmm...I can't socialise even if my life depended on it...sucks....Anyway I doubt I'll be going again cause any effort to interact with the human race apart from the internet ends up in me feeling useless. Doesn't help my already dented, bruised, killed and buried confidence level. Back to my confort zone where I don't care if I'm ignored and forgotten.....so that...

Been over a month that I've made a blog post...Basically still struggling to make a living so had decided to make some extra efforts and therefore had close to no time for blogging. Those extra efforts didn't really materialise into any real work...and I'm back to square one...

Anyway back here, need to redo the blog template, might possibly upgrade to the new blogger (yep, I'm still running the old one) and make some changes by incorporating my photography into this on a more professional basis. Lets see how things turn out for me and this blog...
