I use the SIgma 50mm. The canon 50mm isn't a true 1:1 macro lens. To achieve 1:1 on the canon you need an adapter. You're better off with a 60mm.
So comparing the Sigma 50mm with the canon 60mm, I feel the Sigma might be sharper than the Canon wide open. Also the Sigma costs less. The downside is that it extends when focusing close and focus is really slow though slow focus isn't an issue with macro work as it's advisable to manual focus instead. I'm happy with the Sigma 50mm though it's not for bug shots so I plan to upgrade to either the Canon 100mm or the Sigma 150mm.
17-40 f4L...Its a very nice lens though make sure you don't want f2.8 instead cause f4 isn't very good indoors without a flash...

It's not a question of wanting; it's a question of affording :(
The f/2.8 lens costs 1600 dollars while the f/4 one is only 700.

I am not sure if I remember right but didn't you have a ultra zoom. Maybe you told me you bought a DSLR but I can't recall.
Why can't you just buy the 17-55mm f2.8??? Should be $900.
The 16-35mm is one spanking great lens. I used it for a day on the 50D, loved it!!! :D

I don't think I told you :o
I did get a DSLR a couple weeks ago - Canon Rebel XS with the kit lens (18-55mm), as it was on sale at a great price.

Oh come on!
The red colored "L" speaks volumes :) As nice as the 17-55mm f/2.8 may be, it doesn't compare with image quality of the L lens :p (or the pride of owing a white colored canon lens :p)
And as for the 17-40mm f/2.8 L lens, it is a LOT heavier than the f/4 version too. Mostly I will be shooting outdoors; the 50mm prime can be used for indoors pictures.

The XS.....whyyyyyyyy!!!
You should have spent the extra money for an XSi....
Anyway the 17-55mm f2.8 is not a L lens cause it doesn't work on a full frame camera but if it did, it would have been an L lens. That's how good it is. Only negative about it is it's built quality that is not upto L standard.
the 16-35mm or the 17-40mm are not white lens but black though they do have the red line.....
What do you need the lens for??? You could get a 10-22mm, UWA is kick ass!!!

Hmmmm I was told to cheap out on the body and spend more on lenses by someone ;-)

Fair enough. I am saving up right now, but this will be on the list of stuff to possibly purchase when I am ready to buy. :)

I've never done ultra wide angle. Gotta borrow someone's UWA lens and shoot with it for a bit to see if I like it or not. I'm more of a telephoto fan than anything, though.
Where's your gear collection page? Do you have an account at POTN?

True on saving on body but the XS is crappy. Seriously get the XSi....it's a much better camera for a small increase in price...even think of getting a second hand 40D if you can!!!

Too late to return it now in any case, but why so? What's so much better with the xsi?

And BTW you are loaded with gear :)
If I ever come to Dubai, you need to come shooting with me ;)

More focus points, better AF, better fps, better screen, live view is all worth extra $$$...
I might be loaded with gear but they aren't even close to being the best lens around, well most of them!!!

XS has live view :)

It's a good photographer that makes good pictures, not good lenses ;)
How is the 50mm 2.8 macro? Is that the Canon or Sigma lens?
I am considering buying that lens but we'll see how it goes...
I also have my eyes on the 17-40 f4 L and that will burn a deep hole in the pocket :(
